The 2026 Tipped Occupation Codes, as data
Treasury publishes the "no tax on tips" occupation list as a PDF table. This is the same 71 occupations as CSV and JSON — each one's Related SOC Code(s), and IRS's own tip-reporting statistics joined to BLS wages, which nobody else has republished at all.
26 U.S.C. §224 (from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) makes cash tips deductible only if the recipient's occupation appears on a fixed list Treasury Decision 10044 defines. That list is Table 1 — 71 occupations across 8 categories, each mapped to one or more 2018 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes. Nothing outside it qualifies, no matter how much someone is actually tipped.
A second table in the same regulation — Table A — reports, for tax year 2023, what share of workers in each occupation actually reported tips, what share of all reported tips nationally came from that occupation, and tips as a percentage of total wages. This page joins Table A's SOC codes to BLS wage data, so a reader can see not just whether an occupation qualifies, but what the deduction is likely worth to it.
71 occupations, 8 categories
5 suppressed
Treasury withheld the tip-reporting figure for 5 occupations — too few returns to publish without disclosing individuals. Shown as unpublished, never as zero.
Highest tip share of pay
Gambling Dealers 70.7%
Among workers who report tips, the share of total wage compensation tips make up — the figure that decides whether the $25,000 deduction cap actually binds.
Most reported tips nationally
Wait Staff 34.3%
This occupation's share of every dollar of tips reported to the IRS in tax year 2023, across all tipped occupations combined.
Methodology
The occupation list and SOC mapping are transcribed from Table 1 to 26 CFR §1.224-1(f) in the final rule (TD 10044), read 2026-08-21 and cross-checked 2026-08-26 against the Federal Register's machine-readable XML rendering of the same table — all 71 rows agreed. This is the FINAL rule, not the September 2025 proposed rule, which lacked several categories the final table added in response to public comment.
Tip-reporting statistics are Treasury's own Table A, "Reported Tips of Single-Job Holders, Tax Year 2023," read 2026-08-25 from the Federal Register's full text. BLS wages are the May 2023 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics national cross-industry estimates — May 2023 rather than a newer release, to match the tax year of the tip statistics; joining a later wage to a 2023 tip share would produce a figure belonging to no year.
An occupation shown as unpublished rather than a number is a genuine Treasury or BLS suppression — too few returns, or an occupation not paid year-round or hourly — never a missing lookup on this site's part.
