Assumes an Australian resident for the whole year who claims the tax-free threshold, one employer and no other income or deductions, for 2026-27. Rates read from the ATO on 2026-10-03. This is an estimate, not payroll or tax advice; a payslip withholds by the ATO's weekly formulas and your tax return settles the exact amount.

Worked example
$90,000 a year, step by step
For a resident with the tax-free threshold and no study loan, $90,000 becomes $70,680.00 a year, or $5,890.00 a month.
| Step | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax | $4,020 + 30c × ($90,000 − $45,000) | −$17,520.00 |
| Medicare levy | 2% × $90,000 | −$1,800.00 |
| Take-home | per year | $70,680.00 |
| Super on top | 12% × $90,000, paid by your employer | $10,800.00 |
Salary sacrificing $10,000 into super takes take-home pay to $63,880.00 a year, a drop of $6,800 rather than $10,000, because that amount is no longer taxed. Your employer still pays the full $10,800 guarantee.

Every figure is traced to an official source
Each rate and threshold was read from the page named beside it on 2026-10-03. The ATO's site refuses automated requests, so each page was read from its Internet Archive capture. If the ATO changes a figure, the date tells you how old ours is.
- ATO: Australian resident tax rates
2026-27 resident rates: nil to $18,200, 15c to $45,000 (4,020 base at $45,000), 30c to $135,000, 37c to $190,000, 45c above; 2025-26 at 16c for comparison; the Medicare levy is not included
- ATO: Medicare levy reduction for low-income earners
No levy at or below $28,011 taxable income, a reduced levy up to $35,013 (single, not entitled to the seniors and pensioners tax offset)
- ATO: Low income tax offset
$700 up to $37,500, minus 5c per $1 to $45,000, then $325 minus 1.5c per $1 to $66,667; non-refundable
- ATO: Study and training loan repayment thresholds and rates
2026-27 marginal repayment bands: nil to $69,528, 15c to $129,717, $9,028 plus 17c to $186,050, then 10% of total repayment income; repayment income includes reportable super contributions
- ATO: Medicare levy surcharge income, thresholds and rates
2026-27 single thresholds $105,000 / $123,000 / $164,000 and surcharge rates 0%, 1%, 1.25%, 1.5% charged on income for MLS purposes
- ATO: Maximum contribution base
The super guarantee rate of 12%, the 2026-27 maximum contribution base of $270,830 and the $32,500 concessional contributions cap from 1 July 2026
- ATO: Salary sacrificing super
Salary sacrifice does not reduce the pay super guarantee is calculated on; sacrificed amounts are not assessable income but are reportable super contributions; 15% fund tax; Division 293 above $250,000
- ATO: Identify reportable employer super contributions
Additional contributions under a salary sacrifice arrangement are reportable employer super contributions
- ATO: How to claim the tax-free threshold
The $18,200 tax-free threshold is worth $350 a week, $700 a fortnight and $1,517 a month, and is claimed on the TFN declaration
- ATO: Multiple jobs or change of job
Claim the tax-free threshold from one payer at a time; a second payer should withhold at the no-tax-free-threshold rate, or the year can end in a tax bill
- ATO: PAYG withholding Schedule 1, coefficients for weekly payments
Scale 2 (tax-free threshold claimed) coefficients for payments made from 1 July 2026 (published 17 June 2026); used as the independent check of the engine
What it assumes, and leaves out
- An Australian resident for the whole year, claiming the tax-free threshold, with one employer and no other income or deductions.
- A steady salary for the year. Employers withhold by the ATO's weekly formulas, so a payslip can differ from the assessed amount until the tax return settles it.
- The Medicare levy reduction thresholds are the pair the ATO currently prints ($28,011 and $35,013). The ATO had not published 2026-27 figures on 2026-10-03; this matters only between about $28,000 and $35,000.
- The Medicare levy surcharge uses the single thresholds. Families have their own ($210,000 and above, rising $1,500 for each dependent child after the first).
- Salary sacrifice counts towards HELP repayment income and the surcharge income test, as reportable super contributions. The concessional cap is checked against the guarantee plus what you sacrifice; carry-forward of unused cap and Division 293 tax above $250,000 are not modelled.
- Not included: deductions, offsets other than the low income offset, part-year residents, foreign residents, working holiday makers, Medicare levy exemptions and the seniors and pensioners tax offset.
Questions
Australian take-home pay, answered
How is take-home pay worked out in Australia?
Income tax and the 2% Medicare levy come out of your salary, plus a study loan repayment if you have one. The first $18,200 is tax-free, then 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. Your employer pays 12% super on top, which is not part of take-home pay.
Is super included in my salary?
Usually not: a salary of $90,000 normally means $90,000 plus $10,800 of super (12%). A "package" quote can include super, which makes the salary about 11% lower than the headline figure. The calculator has a switch for it.
What changed on 1 July 2026?
The tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 fell from 16% to 15%, worth up to $268 a year. HELP repayment thresholds were indexed, so repayments now start above $69,528 instead of $67,000. The super guarantee stays at 12%.
How does a HELP loan affect my pay?
Since 2025-26 repayments are marginal: nothing below $69,528 of repayment income, 15c on each dollar above it, then a higher rate above $129,717 and 10% of the whole income from $186,051. They are settled in your tax return, and employers withhold in advance.
What is the Medicare levy surcharge?
An extra 1% to 1.5% of your whole income if you earn over $105,000 (single) and do not hold private patient hospital cover. Salary sacrifice does not avoid it, because sacrificed super still counts towards the income it is tested on.
How accurate is this calculator?
It works out a full year on a steady salary, using the rates the ATO publishes for 2026-27, and checks itself against the ATO's own withholding formulas. A payslip can differ during the year because employers withhold using weekly formulas; the tax return settles the exact amount. It does not cover deductions, other income, part-year residents, working holiday makers, foreign residents or Medicare levy exemptions.
