What a Sandusky resident owes on $60,000
The work city withholds; Sandusky then charges its own rate less the credit. The last column is what is usually not withheld from any paycheck.

|---|---|---|---|
| Columbus2.5% | $1,500 | $0 | $750 |

- Sandusky's ordinance: a resident taxed by another municipality "shall not be allowed any credit against, or claim of refund for, City Income Tax."
- A Sandusky resident working elsewhere owes Sandusky's full 1.25% on top of the work city's tax.
- The only exception in the ordinance is a narrow pass-through-entity credit for resident owners, capped at 50% of the city tax. Not applicable to wages, not modelled.

Sandusky income tax: common questions
What is the income tax rate in Sandusky, Ohio?
1.25% on wages for 2026. Your employer withholds for the city you WORK in, so if you work elsewhere in Ohio you may owe Sandusky a residual at filing time rather than nothing.
Does Sandusky credit tax I paid to the city I work in?
No. Sandusky grants no credit at all for municipal tax paid to another Ohio city, so a resident owes Sandusky's full 1.25% on top of whatever the work city withheld. This is unusual but entirely lawful — ORC 718.04(D) leaves the credit to each municipality's discretion.
Is Sandusky a RITA city?
Yes. Sandusky's rate, credit factor and credit rate are published by RITA, the Regional Income Tax Agency, which administers municipal income tax for its member cities. That means residents generally file and pay through RITA rather than directly with Sandusky, and a RITA account covers every member municipality you owe in the same filing.
Why do I owe Sandusky money at filing time?
Because Ohio employers withhold for the WORK city, not the home city — ORC 718.03(A)(1). If Sandusky's rate exceeds what its credit absorbs, the difference is owed directly to Sandusky and is usually not withheld from any paycheck. That residual is what catches people out.
