HSA & FSA tax savings calculator
Compare a current and proposed HSA, health FSA, or dependent-care FSA contribution. Unlike a 401(k), all three cut Social Security and Medicare tax too, not just income tax -- see exactly how much below.

HSA & FSA: common questions
What is the 2026 HSA contribution limit?
$4,400 for self-only HDHP coverage, $8,750 for family coverage (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-19), plus an additional $1,000 catch-up if you're 55 or older -- that catch-up figure is fixed by statute, not inflation-indexed, and has been $1,000 since 2009.
What is the 2026 health FSA contribution limit?
$3,400 (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32), up $100 from 2025's $3,300. If your employer's plan permits a carryover into the next plan year, the maximum carryover is $680.
What is the 2026 dependent care FSA limit?
$7,500 ($3,750 if married filing separately) -- a real increase, not a typo: OBBBA §70404 raised this from $5,000 ($2,500 MFS) starting in 2026, the first change to this figure since 1986. If you're using a calculator or spreadsheet built before mid-2025, it likely still shows the old $5,000 figure.
Does an HSA or FSA reduce my Social Security and Medicare tax, not just income tax?
Yes -- and this is what makes HSA/FSA meaningfully different from a traditional 401(k). A 401(k) deferral reduces federal (and usually state) taxable income but NOT Social Security or Medicare wages. An HSA or FSA payroll contribution, made through a Section 125 cafeteria plan, is excluded from all of federal income tax, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax alike -- see the FICA savings line in the calculator below.
Does every state give HSA and FSA contributions the same tax treatment as the IRS?
Most states follow federal treatment, but not all -- California and New Jersey are known exceptions that tax HSA contributions at the state level despite the federal exclusion. This calculator assumes federal conformity by default and discloses that assumption; it does not verify each state's own statute.
