$25 an hour, full time

Converting an hourly rate to a salary is arithmetic. Converting it to what actually arrives is not, and both steps are shown here.

$25 an hour, full time
Hourly rate$25
Gross, 40 hours a week$52,000
Estimated take-home$43,962
Take-home per hour worked$21

Single filer in Texas, which levies no wage income tax, so this isolates the federal and FICA effect. 52 paid weeks, no unpaid leave and no overtime.

The same rate at 30 hours a week

Hours do not scale take-home proportionally. Fewer hours means a lower salary, which means a lower average tax rate — so a quarter less time worked costs slightly less than a quarter of the take-home.

The same rate at 30 hours a week
Gross, 30 hours a week$39,000
Estimated take-home$33,517
Share of the full-time take-home76.2%, for 75% of the hours

Single filer in Texas, which levies no wage income tax, so this isolates the federal and FICA effect. Benefits eligibility often turns on an hours threshold and is not modelled here — it can matter more than the tax difference.

Common questions

Is a year 2,080 hours?

2,080 is 40 hours across 52 weeks and is the convention most salary conversions use, including this one. It assumes every week is paid: unpaid leave, a furlough, or an unpaid holiday all reduce the real figure, and an hourly worker who takes two unpaid weeks is effectively on a 2,000-hour year.

Does overtime change the conversion?

Yes, and this estimate excludes it. Overtime is additional gross pay and is taxed as ordinary income; a premium rate raises the salary the conversion is based on rather than being taxed separately. The federal overtime deduction enacted for 2026 has its own cap and phase-out and is handled by the dedicated overtime calculator.
