Two dependents on a $75,000 salary

A change in dependents can move two things at once: the credit itself, and the filing status that becomes available alongside it. Both are reflected here.

Two dependents on a $75,000 salary
Single, no dependents$61,593
Head of household, two dependents$67,915
Difference$6,322
Per biweekly cheque$243

Single filer in Texas, which levies no wage income tax, so this isolates the federal and FICA effect. Head of household requires paying more than half the cost of keeping a home for a qualifying person — it does not follow automatically from having a dependent.

One dependent against two

The first dependent carries the filing-status change with it, so it moves take-home further than the second one does. That is worth knowing before assuming each addition is worth the same.

One dependent against two
One dependent$65,715
Two dependents$67,915
The second dependent adds$2,200
The first added$4,122

Single filer in Texas, which levies no wage income tax, so this isolates the federal and FICA effect. The first figure includes moving from single to head of household; the second is the credit alone.

Common questions

When should Form W-4 be updated after a birth or adoption?

As soon as the change happens, rather than at year end. Withholding is calculated from what the W-4 currently says, so a form that still reflects last year's household withholds too much all year and returns it only as a refund. Updating it moves the money into each paycheck instead.

Does a dependent have to be a child?

No. A qualifying relative can also be a dependent, subject to support and income tests, and the credit that applies differs from the one for a qualifying child. This calculator models the dependent count you enter and does not distinguish between the two, so treat it as an estimate where the relationship is not a straightforward dependent child.
