What it assumes, and leaves out
- A regular monthly salary all year, without annual bonuses, overtime, part-time work or a part-year.
- No mutuelle or optional prévoyance: their amounts depend on the employer and the collective agreement. A cadre's mandatory prévoyance (1.5% of tranche 1, paid by the employer) is included in the CSG base and taxable pay.
- Withholding is the default-rate grid's, or your personalised rate if you enter it: it is not the household's final tax, which depends on the family quotient, deductions and credits and is regularised on the return.
- The extra health contribution in Alsace-Moselle (1.30%) is not calculated.
- Contributions are rounded to the cent line by line, as on a payslip.
Questions
French gross and net pay, answered
How do you get from gross to net in France?
Employee contributions come off gross: old-age insurance (6.90% up to the social security ceiling, 0.40% on the whole), Agirc-Arrco complementary pension (3.15% then 8.64%), CEG and CET, the APEC for cadres, and CSG and CRDS (9.7% on 98.25% of gross). What is left is net before tax. Withholding tax then applies to it: that is net after tax.
What is the difference between net before tax and net after tax?
Net before tax is gross less social contributions and appears on the payslip. Net after tax is what reaches the bank account: it also deducts withholding tax, an advance on income tax, worked out on taxable pay.
What is the default (neutral) rate?
It is the rate from the official grid that applies to the monthly withholding base when the employee has not passed on a personalised rate. It gives one rate for the whole base and depends on where you live: mainland France, Guadeloupe, Réunion and Martinique, or Guyane and Mayotte. The grid in force dates from 1 May 2026.
What is the social security ceiling?
The ceiling (PASS) is €48,060 a year, €4,005 a month in 2026. Some contributions apply only to the part of pay under it, others run to four or eight ceilings.
How accurate is this calculator?
Contributions and withholding were compared with 146 cases worked by the Urssaf's open-source model (the engine behind mon-entreprise.urssaf.fr), to within a few cents: the model keeps fractions of a cent, a payslip rounds each line. Rates and ceilings come from the Urssaf, Agirc-Arrco and the Bofip. Not covered: mutuelle, overtime, annual bonuses, part-time work, Alsace-Moselle and the household's final tax.
